Trust's Culture Fest at Verdmont promises much

The Bermuda National Trust will hold a 'Culture Fest' on Saturday in celebration of the Island's 400th anniversary. The event will be held at Verdmont and will include a display of Bermuda's many traditions. Said Kelly Way, the Trust's director of Development: "During the day there shall be arts of the home with stitchery, quilting, Gombey costumes, Portuguese handicrafts and dress up.

"Arts of the land will have agricultural farming, herbal remedies, palmetto weaving, honey production, sustainable development and raising farm animals.

"Arts of the sea will include a gig constructed in Bermuda and traditional fishing equipment. Woodworking will be displayed by building blue bird boxes, kite making, and cedar objects."

Included in the festivities will be a variety of children's activities, local mason construction displays and an archaeology display.

Ms Way added: "There will also be a series of porch conversations on various subjects. Porch conversations are very informal chats with a panel of two to four people with encourage audience participation.

"Some of the porch conversations lined up are stories of Verdmont, by those who lived on the property and those who lived nearby and sustainable development, where we came from, where we are now and where we are going."

Events begin at 1 p.m. and are expected to conclude at 8.30 p.m. Continued Ms Way: "At 5 p.m. local entertainment will begin displaying various aspects of our culture. There shall be Indian dancers, pipe band, Portuguese dancers, Stan Seymour, African dancers, Apex 4 (and) Gombeys.

Admission is free. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Parking will be available at Elliot Primary School field, with transportation provided to and from Verdmont.
