West End recipients get their Further Education Awards

The Sandys Parish Council, under its chairman, Mrs. Dawn Simmons, held an impressive presentation ceremony for recipients of Further Education Awards.

The young people from the Sandys community receiving the scholarships are: Andre Shakir, studying Building Construction and Cabinet Making Technology at the New England Institute of Technology; Kimberly Fraser, for Interior Design at Savannah College of Art and Design; Jevone Morrissey, for Automotive Service Management at New England Institute of Technology; Natasha Simmons, for Nursing at Hampton University; Angela Dickinson, Business Administration, Marketing and Advertising at the Bermuda College; and Duane Richards, Nursing (Midwifery), also at the Bermuda College.

All but one of the recipients are graduates of Sandys Secondary Middle School. Some are already abroad. The three-member selection committee comprised educators Dr. Tracy Grant, Mrs. Patricia Chapman and Dr. Emily-Gale Dill. Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce Michael Scott presented the awards to the students and or their family representatives.

This is the second year the Parish Council has assisted persons from the West End community with their further education.

Council members are Dawn Simmons, chair; Rudolph (Buddy) Hollis, vice-chair; Norbert Simmons, Norette Simmons, Carla Pedro, Jo-Dina Pearman, Dr. Melvyn Bassett, Dr. Tracy Grant, Victor Ruberry, Julie Downey, Robert Steynor, Pat Chapman and Makai Dickinson.
