Why every day should be Valentine's Day
From Super Bowl to Valentine's Day! Happy Belated Valentine's Day, Family! I deliberately did not say anything about Valentine's Day last week because it is such a ridiculous commercial farce.
Let's be real, none of the stores that advertise for Valentine's Day care anything about anyone's relationship! They only care about sales, revenue and their own net income. But the entire world is foolishly and materially focused on Valentine's Day and businesses take full advantage of the opportunity to make us feel like we have to spend lots of money to celebrate Valentines Day, when we really do not. More about this after the top 20.
Up to #1 is I Invented Sex by Trey Songz featuring Drake. These two dudes are a scream. I listened carefully to the words last week and couldn't believe my ears. The stuff they put/allow in songs nowadays is unbelievable! Check it out for yourself and you'll see what I mean.
Improving to #2 is Money To Blow by Birdman featuring Li'l Wayne and Drake. Tumbling to #3 is Empire State of Mind by Jay Z and Alicia Keys, a popular track with catchy lyrics. You gotta like anything to do with the Big Apple. My Dad adores the city, as do many others. It really is a special place and I can't really explain it to you in words; you just have to go experience it for yourself and you will see what I mean. The state of Texas has a saying that "Everything is bigger in Texas". Well, I'm here to tell you that everything is done to the max in New York. This song is sort of like a 2010 version of Frank Sinatra's New York anthem. It speaks to everything that is the city and why so many people love it, flock to it, move there and just can't get enough of it.
Falling to #4 its Baby By Me by 50 Cent featuring Ne-Yo. The song bangs but I really hate the words, which encourage out of wedlock births. Falling to #5 its Bad Habits by Maxwell, a very smooth ballad.
Making a huge jump to #6 is It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona, one of the hottest love songs of the moment. Improving to #7 is Say Aah by Trey Songz featuring Fabolous, a former essential new track and a banger. Slipping to #8 is Whitney Houston's monster hit Million Dollar Bill.
Up to #9 is How Low by Ludacris, a huge track featuring the dirty South sound, catchy lyrics and this week's essential new tune. You have to give Ludacris props; he is a bit clean cut and not so hard core and bad boy as many other rappers, yet his music is still bangin. Improving to #10 is Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by Alicia Keys.
Also rising to #11 is Snoop Dogg's latest rap anthem, I Wanna Rock, which I am convinced is the hottest rap track on the circuit. Up to #12 is Sex Therapy by Robin Thicke. Soaring to #13 is Why Don't You Love Me by Beyonce, yet another hit from the hottest R&B artist in the game.
Leaping to #14 is Hard by Rihanna, one of the most popular songs in the world. Falling into the #15 spot is Run This Town by Jay Z, Rihanna and Kanye West. On the way up at #16 its Bedrock by Young Money featuring Lloyd. Falling to #17 is Mary Mary with God In Me. Slipping to #18 is Make Me by Janet Jackson. Tumbling to #19 is Boom Boom Pow, the kicking dance/pop anthem by Black Eyed Peas.
On the way out at #20 is Papers by Usher.
Now back to this week's word – Just say No to Valentine's Day! I understand why some women and men are bent out of shape about Valentine's Day, but I wish to encourage people in relationships to not wait until February 14 of any year to start treating their significant others in a combination of the following: the way you would like to be treated, the way you know is right, the way they would like to be treated and the way they should be treated.
I chose this language and those ways carefully because ultimately you should keep in mind what the person in question likes. They may not like what you like. Also, what you feel is the way that they should be treated may not be the way they wish to be treated. In addition, in our hearts, we all know what is right and that is always a good way to go.
But the most important advice that I can give is the advice given to me by one of my Dad's buddies. I asked him if he remembered his wife at Valentine's Day. He said every day is Valentine's Day in his marriage! Profound, but good advice. The moral of the story is to take care of your significant other every day and then on Valentine's Day you will not need to do anything extravagant, drastic and/or over the top.
However, back to my point, the companies in question who advertise and encourage you, especially men, to spend ridiculous sums of money on flowers, dinners, gifts and other material things don't give a darn about the men or the women in question. They are only interested in making money out of us the unsuspecting public who fall prey to marketing, pressure, doubt, guilt, etc. People should keep that in mind.
There are less expensive and more sensitive and genuine ways to celebrate Valentine's Day than buy going to the most expensive restaurant, buying the most overpriced flowers and anything else that has a price jacked up in the lead up to Valentine's Day.
You can prepare a home cooked meal but do it up a little more. People who don't normally cook can make dinner and use the best cutlery, flatware, etc. you have. Those who drink wine can open up a bottle of wine. You can make a card yourself on a computer. You can go out and handpick flowers from somewhere.
Use your imagination but ultimately you don't need to go overboard and the most important thing is to do this throughout the year, not just in February, which is why it is perfectly OK for me to deliberately submit this piece the week after Valentine's Day. Peace… DJLT.
