A driving passion

Remy Bonne-Smith loves nothing more than being behind the wheel of this Formula BMW speed machine.

Remy Bonne-Smith's passion for the pedal began when he was just a little kid and this need for speed put him on a fast track for a Formula BMW licence.

He told The Royal Gazette that he fondly remembers driving a go-kart at Disney World as fast as he could.

He even learned how to drive the family Peugeot in his driveway when he was only ten. Now, he races Formula cars.

Formula Racing is one of the most famous sports in the world. It has many categories like Formula One, known as the most expensive sport in the world, Formula Two and Three, and the GP2 Series.

Other classes for Formula Racing are Formula Ford, Formula Renault and Formula BMW.

Mr. Bonne-Smith was studying in Toulouse, France for his International Baccalaureate (IB) when he started kart racing in Le Mans.

"I started racing in 2007 with Auto Sport Academy," said the 20-year-old. "I had about four days of training and competed in about six race weekends."

After completing his IB, Mr. Bonne-Smith spent his gap year in Paris where he joined Le Mans Superkart, a smaller go-karting team.

"My parents always maintained that I combine my university education with my passion."

However, it has all not been a smooth ride for Mr. Bonne-Smith, because on one occasion he banged himself up.

"It was the last race of the season in May 2008, Laval, France," he said.

"It was the end of the day and I was going about 110 km when I made a right turn, hit the curb and went flying into a barrier.

"I cracked a rib and because of that injury I couldn't complete the weekend. It was a great experience. I became a mid level runner during my time with Le Mans Superkart."

When he returned to Bermuda during the winter of 2008, he rented a kart and competed in races at Southside.

He came second in one race and won the other two.

"I obtained the certificate to get the licence to compete in the series when I enrolled in the course at Valencia, Spain."

He then took the Formula BMW licence on a two-day course in Valencia with fifteen others, where they were all commended for their high level performances.

"During the course I was approached by a driver development manager from a Formula BMW team in England," said Mr. Bonne-Smith.

"He recommended that I do two days of intensive training to see if racing was what I really wanted."

"I have been following Formula One for many years and my favourite drivers are Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen."

Others he has followed are Michael Schumacher and the late Ayrton Senna who died in an accident while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Itay.

Recognising the fact that he will need sponsors, after he raises the funds, he is planning to test with the Motaworld Racing team.

"If I do well with them, we will see about racing with them next season," said Mr. Boone-Smith, who is a summer student at Orbis Investment Management.

"I have no doubt in my mind that I want to race and that I can do it successfully."
