After long slide, a little slice of playground paradise is reborn

Spearheading project: Wayne Scott at the site of the new Warwick playground.

A derelict playground near Lorraine's Rest Home is about to be revamped through the generosity of Warwick residents.

Spearheading the move is Warwick resident Wayne Scott who said he felt the area needed a playground.

"I think Warwick as a community and especially that area needs something like that," he said.

"It is kind of interesting because one of the things that you hear, and Warwick is a microcosm of Bermuda as a whole, is that people want to know what we are doing for the kids.

"I took my kids to that playground next to Lorraine's Rest Home when they were young and my eldest daughter is 19 now, and it was kind of falling apart then."

Speaking about the playground at Warwick Long Bay West, he explained that it didn't support the community on Cedar Hill.

"It might as well have been on another continent, because again you can't access it, because if you look at the demographics of people who would really use it, it is now out of reach," said Mr. Scott.

"The whole area has been overgrown and we have been working with the Parish Council to get that there cleared out."

Mr. Scott and the community had been working on the project for quite a while. "This is a project that I wanted to do two years ago and had commitments for and donations to put it together, but it is only recently that I have been given permission by the Parish Council," he said.

The equipment for the revamp is in a container on the land. "Historically the Parks Department have always maintained the field and I think it was suggested that I talk with them with regards to installing the playground, because it is the same equipment that they have been installing in Shelly Bay and they maintain the field anyway.

"They have agreed to do the installation, so we're just waiting on them now."

His most important reason behind the playground is for the community at large. "I have been talking about this for a couple of years and people still ask me about it on the street, 'what happened to that playground?'

"It is coming, I've got the money raised. Parks said they will get it on their list right after Cup Match, so I am trying to liaise with them as to exactly when that is going to get done.

"So I would hope that in the next couple of weeks it will be taken out of the container and be installed. The Parks Department did come and pick up the site plan, which has the layout.

"The trees have been cut down to waist high and all the old equipment has been thrown away.

"We talk about having something as a celebration for young kids to bring youth and families together and what better place than having a park right there in the community."

He added: "I'm from Warwick, I used to take my kids there, I want to give back. I want to give back to the community. So spearheading this and helping to pull together a project like this is actually very good.

"We've had some generous donations from Warwick residents and other services and I am really pleased to be able to get this done."

The father-of-two felt it would help get children away from the television and use up some energy. "I remember when we were little, we used to run up and down, take a toy truck, a piece of formica and go up and down the hill, and if you found a baby carriage you were in heaven because that was axles for a go-cart."
