Keep your fingers crossed for your favourite classical musician . . .
'They Came to Play'
'They Came to Play' creates the sensation of being serenaded by classical musicians Chopin and Beethoven.
Shut your eyes for a moment during the film and you can hear elaborate symphonies echoing from the speakers.
But the documentary, by Alex Rotaru, is not based in the classical and romantic eras of the 1800s.
Set in Fort Worth, Texas, dozens of modern-day piano prodigies head to Van Cliburn Foundation's competition each year for the chance of a lifetime. Many travel from miles around to vie for the title of International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs.
And while there can only be one winner, for a brief second the contestants, aged 35 and up, relive their childhood fantasies.
It's a well-paced documentary featuring three- or four-minute clips with the contestants talking about their lives and love of piano.
Many of the 'amateurs' were self-taught, others were classically trained. Some are dental assistants, others doctors and businessmen.
Still, their talent is undeniable and there is a long-running debate in the film over what then constitutes the title 'amateur'.
In the end the definition that makes the most sense is 'someone who does it for the love of piano playing' and not the money.
Regardless, their skills are awe-inspiring and some of their stories truly fascinating. And I felt strangely connected to those players who overcame great odds like drug addiction and AIDS to take part in the competition.
In the end, what resonated most with me was when a stout, elderly lady compares music to air and food. The idea that piano playing is that essential, yet basic to her is rather powerful.
As the elimination rounds progress the mood of the documentary gets more tense and at times you can feel the exciting buzz in the room.
But only one pianist can walk away with the grand prize so remember to keep your fingers crossed for your favourite classical musician.
'They Came to Play' screens tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
