Much R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for Alexa Lightbourne

Miss Teen Bermuda 2007 Alexa lightbourne, who ended her reign on Sunday night, threw a triumphant concert on Friday night featuring international artist Miri Ben-Ari to ensure her reign will be remembered.

She wanted to raise the bar for Miss Teen Bermuda Islands of the future and Alexa Lightbourne Miss Teen Bermuda Islands 2007, didn't disappoint.

Coordinating multiple live performances from Bermudians as well as the hip hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari for her R.E.S.P.E.C.T. concert to raise money for the Sunshine League — a registered charity that provides housing for displaced children — the 16-year-old Berkeley student pulled together an entertaining evening.

From MC Ed Christopher to the hilarious antics of the drummer in Bermuda's jazz band The Unit, the first half of the two-and-a-half hour show at City Hall on Friday night was full of stellar performances. These were kicked off with Twanee Butterfield singing Rhianna's hit song 'Take a Bow'.

Then the Unit took the stage. The Island should be proud to know that the Unit will be representing Bermuda in Cuba in the coming months. The performers clearly have a good time with each other and that translates for the audience.

Heads were swaying and hands clapping and that reached a crescendo as Aimee Bento joined them to sing two songs. Switching seamlessly from Jazz to Alicia Keys' 'No One', the Unit showed their diversity.

The drummer even offered a moment of hilarity and talent as his drum solo included losing his sticks. Playing more bongo then any other drum, he carried their performance away to intermission.

Unfortunately, challenging Miss Teen Bermuda were some "complications" back stage. Bermudian musicians who had been practicing and had donated their time and effort to help support Miss Lightbourne for her concert didn't make it to the stage.

From what this paper understands legendary hip hop violinist, Miri Ben-Ari was not happy to hear Bermudian violinist Taylor Rankin was going to perform before her. So Taylor and at least seven other performers didn't take the stage for their waiting fans.

Miss Teen Bermuda, however, proved how unflappable she is and how far beyond her years she is by finding two impromptu acts, Septimus and Ryan Bean, to step-in and carry the show along with scheduled Antonio James, to the finale.

And what a finale.

She has received accolades after accolades from the likes of JayZ and Wyclef Jean, and Miss Ben-Ari deserves them all. Besides the complications with the performers before, she said she felt "at home" in Bermuda and the minute her bow touched the strings of her violin goose bumps filled the auditorium.

Perhaps the best part of the performance was when the Grammy Award winner called Miss Lightbourne to the stage to accompany her in her hit single 'Symphony of Brotherhood', which features the 'I Have a Dream' speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Miss Lightbourne showed off the violin skills she has been honing since she was eight years old. It was beautiful to hear both instruments in union.

But then Miss Lightbourne is a beautiful girl who truly succeeded in her first ever concert to do what she hoped for her reign — to leave behind a legacy.
