Olga Scott honoured to receive OBE at Buckingham Palace

Long-time youth counsellor Olga Scott recently received The Queen's award of an OBE from The Prince of Wales, who officiated at the Investiture Ceremony held at Buckingham Palace, London.

Accompanied by her family, husband and former Premier Alex Scott, daughter Robyn Eve, and son Lawrence Scott, Mrs. Scott said that: "I feel quite privileged that I've been given the opportunity to work with young people over the years, and to be singled out and honoured in this way for the contribution that I have made is very humbling."

It should be noted that while Mrs. Scott was the only Bermudian in attendance at the May Palace ceremony (one of the Twenty-five Investitures which are held each year), she was one of 123 individuals from the Commonwealth to be honoured on the day.

Later, joining her at a Thai restaurant for a celebratory luncheon was Mrs. Scott's brother Basil Folkes, and his wife Enid – in addition to UK and Jamaican friends who live in London. Commenting on The Palace Investiture Program description of Mrs. Scott's contribution which states: "For services to the Health Education and Development of Young People in Bermuda", a guest at the lunch observed that: "It is most certainly a long way from St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica to Buckingham Palace", observing that the events of the day poignantly underscored the extent and success of Mrs. Scott's career as an administrator and innovator of social services.

During her 35 years of service to Bermuda, Mrs. Scott was instrumental in establishing the Youth Health Education and Development (YHED – in the late 1960s) which now is known as Teen Services. She has she served as past Chairwoman and now is a current Member of Teen Services Board of Directors; in addition she is a member of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Trust; a Charity Commissioner, 2005 to present; Co-Chairperson of the Bermuda National Schools Competition, 1979-2009; Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Cobb's Hill Methodist Church, 2009 to present; over 40 years a long standing member of The Bermuda Continental Society (a charitable organisation which administers to children) and as an active and dedicated member she served in various offices including that of President, Vice President and Public Relations Officer.
