Stage is set for summer camp
Gilbert & Sullivan's August theatre summer camp will be taught by a Bermudian comedian musician who is making good in the Big Apple.
"Gilbert & Sullivan is for the first time is holding a summer camp," said Jane Vickers of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society Bermuda.
Part of the August summer camp will be taught by Daniel Frith, well known for his humorous performances as "reggae master" Uzimon.
Another professional actor and singer, Gary Skelton, will also teach the upcoming August camp.
The current Gilbert & Sullivan July summer camp is being taught by Warwick Academy drama teacher Matthew McGowan.
Mr. Frith, 31, studied acting at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
After university, he started his career by performing in several plays at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
"I was fortunate enough to not really have to have any other job but acting for five years," said Mr. Frith. "Then I got bored and moved to New York City."
Mr. Frith said he was in New York City because it's the greatest possible place in the world to live. "I have done voice-overs and commercials," he said. "The television work started off well here in New York City. I did a 'Law and Order SVU' episode with Carol Burnett about a year ago."
Unfortunately, the film and television industry has been affected by the current economic climate, just like other industries.
"A lot of television shows aren't shooting in New York City anymore," said Mr. Frith. "It's really slow here right now. The economy, and tax incentives have been scaled back and most of the television and film stuff is in Los Angeles, California."
On the side, Mr. Frith works as a certified personal trainer.
But he said his humorous performances as "reggae master" Uzimon have been doing well.
"We're working really closely with Joe Ferry (multiple-grammy nominated reggae and ska producer) and we're having a blast," he said. Mr. Frith said in today's showbiz world, the best way to make it is to have your own gig, and to be in the right place, not once, but many, many times.
"You gotta have your own thing rather than wait around for some director to give you an acting job," he said. "Making it in this business is about being in the right place at the right time not once, but more like 50 times. I could always go back to theatre and do that as my career but right now I'm more focused on this project (Uzimon)."
Mr. Frith's Uzimon song 'Suzy Wong Pt3' was recently featured on the new Ride the Wave CD, a compilation of music from local artists. "I don't consider myself a musician firstly," he said. "I'm an actor and comedian who has a musical act.
"My band are musicians, though I am learning more to think like a musician."
For fans of his music, a new Suzy Wong song will be featured on a new album he is putting out soon.
But he said he didn't plan to teach the Gilbert & Sullivan camp as Uzimon.
"I don't think Uzi will be anywhere near that building," he said.
"I have done shows with Gilbert & Sullivan in the past," he said, "as a very young man."
If you're visiting the New York area, Mr. Frith said and his band have Uzimon shows coming up at some of the hottest venues including The Knitting Factory, House of Blues, Brooklyn Bowl and The Stephen Talkhouse. They will also be playing the Austin Reggae Festival in 2011.
The Gilbert & Sullivan summer camp is located at The Bermuda School of Music.
It is for ages eight to 11 in the morning and 12 to 16 in the afternoon.
The camp runs in six week long sessions until August 27. All sessions are $215, except for August 2 to August 6 which is $425.
