Teen drummer off to Canada

Drummer Bryson Doers

Travelling with music has opened the eyes of a teenage drummer set to perform in front of thousands at a festival in Canada next week.

Bryson Doers, a 16-year-old CedarBridge Academy student, has already been given the chance to play drums in Cuba and New York City.

He next journeys to Montreal with drum teacher Eddie Ming, of Rhythm Lab Percussion and Drum School in St. George's, to perform at the KoSa Centre des Arta show on July 9.

Bryson said of past travel experiences: "It has showed me how other students are dedicated to their drums and gives me a more international view of drumming because in Bermuda it is so small. There aren't really a lot of international players."

He continued: "I think Mr. Ming is the only drum teacher that does that in Bermuda. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have been to a lot of places. "

Bryson, Mr. Ming and another CedarBridge student Tajai O'Connor, 17, will form musical trio BOJO at the concert. They will perform a combination of Latin, funk and jazz beats in front of their largest audience ever so far 3,400 tickets have been sold.

Bryson, who plays the piano, violin and is learning guitar, said he was honoured to represent the Island. "I will try to do the best I can to be Bermuda's best so everyone can see how good Bermuda can be," he said.

"I have been doing this so much that I am not as nervous as when I was younger. I haven't heard anything about how the drummers in Montreal play and how they are, but I am sure it will be a learning experience."
