The Secret's out – the show is tonight

The Quartet: Sia Spence, Cindy Smith, Twanee Butterfield and Jonae Smith are The Secret who will perform this evening at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

Bermudian group The Secret was formed after Cindy Smith, Jonaé Smith, Twanée Butterfield and Sia Spence were invited to perform as soloists at a not-so-secret event organised by KDB Entertainment founder and director Kevin Bean.

It was his idea that they sing as part of the 2008 New Year's Eve Showcase he was organising in St. George's. To the surprise of the four soloists, he suggested they sing background vocals for each other during the event and from there came the idea that they could share the stage on a regular basis.

The group returns to the stage tonight, when talent scout Jake McKim, of Music World Entertainment, will be in the audience. Lifestyle reporter René Hill talks to the four singers about their hopes and aspirations and their upcoming performance at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

Cindy Smith brought the house down as Effie White in Gilbert & Sullivan's production of Dreamgirls in 2007. And she was a cast member in a December production that year, 'No Ordinary Christmas'.

She began singing when she was only three or four years old. Until joining the G&S cast she sang only for the Lord.

Kevin Bean, of KDB Entertainment, first contacted her to sing background vocals for a talent competition he had organised, Singing for Success. It was only later that he approached her about joining The Secret.

"I am very new to this in comparison to the other ladies," she said.

"I have been singing in church all my life, but I have sung [with gospel singers based here and overseas]."

Used to performing on her own, she admitted there is a great difference in being part of an all girl group.

"Being a solo artist, I am used to doing everything on my own," she said.

"Now I have three other people that I have to communicate, interact and work with. I actually love singing with these ladies.

Three-time winner of Tha Underground Music Awards Jonaé Smith hopes to land a recording contract.

"I hope as a group we can land a record deal and make music for a living," she said.

"My personal dreams and aspirations are to grow as an artist and a person, and to become an unstoppable force."

Now on the eve of an entire show featuring her group, Miss Smith said: "It is an adrenaline rush to know that people are coming to support you and watch you showcase your talent and give it your all."

Singing in an all girl group has been a refreshing experience for soloist Twanée Butterfield.

"I've been a soloist all my life, so to join up with a group feels extremely powerful," she said.

"We can do everything vocally ourselves! Backgrounds, harmonies, it is so exhilarating! It's definitely a lot easier than having to go into the studio relentlessly to track background vocals. And the best part is we're all solo artists, so any one of us can take the lead at any time."

Miss Butterfield, who has opened for local and international artists, says sharing the same stage as some of the greats, has only made her aims clearer."My ultimate goal is to be signed to a major record label and attain worldwide recognition and distribution as an artist and songwriter," she said.Sia Spence said she was at times excited and other times "so nervous" about tonight's performance.Like Miss Butterfield, she has worked with award-winning artists from the US and gained much experience performing on the local stage. "I dream of living a life filled with all that I love; my family, my friends, my hobbies and my number one singing."The longtime soloist admits singing as part of a group has its challenges, but said: "I am always open to change and this has definitely been a positive one for me."I have learned so much regarding harmonies and teamwork. I have also gained more respect for the ladies that I am singing with."The show starts tonight at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets, $15 for general admission, $30 for patrons, are available at Shannon's Boutique and online at www.premiertickets.com.
