TINY MAKES WAVES
The Tall Ships weren't the only thing returning to Bermuda this weekend.
After a long break, Tiny the Tree Frog, a character created by local artist Elizabeth Mulderig, sailed into town again.
"'Tiny the Tree Frog Sails to Bermuda' is the first new Tiny book published after an eight-year hiatus," said Miss Mulderig.
She is well known for her art work and has also written several other books including 'Tiny Tours Bermuda's Ocean', 'Tiny Tours Bermuda' and 'Do-Boy Digs Bermuda', among others. "Tiny was taking a very long nap but has woken up just in time to welcome the tall ships to Bermuda," she said.
The book is very small, only five inches in diameter, therefore, it is the first in the tiny, Tiny series.
It is meant to fit easily into a mother's purse – those usually crammed with crayons, stray gold fish crackers, beakies and whatnot.
"The story is written in rhyme and, with due consideration to all working parents, only takes five minutes to read," said Miss Mulderig.
In the story, Tiny competes in the sailboat race of his dreams – literally.
Tiny falls asleep inside a little red boat and dreams he hops from ship to ship across the ocean until, 'Land Ho!' he reaches Bermuda.
The names of several of the boats in the story will be familiar to Bermudians, including Shamrock owned by Hugh Watlington who handles the distribution of Miss Mulderig's books.
"Every ship he hops onto actually exists in Bermuda," Miss Mulderig said. Starrtrail belongs to Robert Mulderig. "Of course, Tiny is also very partial to the Spirit of Bermuda which is featured in the story as well."
"The illustrations are very bright and have a 'dreamlike' quality to them," said Miss Mulderig.
"The book is kid proof having cardboard pages rather than paper."
And fans of Tiny can purchase a t-shirt to welcome the fuzzy little tree frog back to Bermuda. The shirts are sold exclusively at A&S Cooper's children's store.
"They sold out the first week and have since been restocked, so not to worry, the store has plenty more which can be seen on the giant Tiny in their window saying, 'Ahoy!' to the tall ships across the street," Miss Mulderig said.
"People seem to like to buy the T-shirts with the books. So, just like Tiny, this seems to be a winner of a combination."
The new book is also featured in the Tiny Troupe Puppet Show, which is travelling from school to school and birthday party to birthday party.
Some of the illustrations in the book are meant to remind people of more famous paintings such as Botticelli's 'The Birth of Venus' and Winslow Homer's 'The Gulf Stream'.
"Tiny, it would seem, is a very cultured frog and hopefully this sail to Bermuda will be another Tiny classic," said Miss Mulderig.
Books, including limited editions, are available at Brown and Co., Bermuda Book store and A&S Cooper's children's store.
A percentage of all Miss Mulderig's books will go to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
