Youth library hosts its Reading Festival tomorrow

A magic show, story time and visits with local celebrities are just some of the rewards for being a book lover, this weekend at the Bermuda Youth Library.

The library, on Church Street, will be hosting its annual Reading Festival tomorrow from 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The purpose of the festival is to celebrate reading and to remind parents about the importance of reading to their children.

"This year we hope to bring an island of readers together under one roof to really drive home the message that reading is important," said youth services librarian Marla Smith.

She encouraged people to come out to the festival with their children. "Be a part of this day of reading excitement," she said. "Get involved in supporting children's literacy in our schools and community.

"Let's motivate our community to be an island of readers on March 7 at the Youth Library... and every day."

The festival will include a Book Babies story hour, with finger plays and singing. There will also be a story hour from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for children aged three to five as well as a storytelling hour from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Celebrity mascots Bird from Belco, Sparky from the Bermuda Fire Service, Captain G from Capital G and Happy from BF&M will join the library mascot Libro Lion and share their favorite stories.

The Cat in the Hat will also be on hand for the Seuss Hour of stories poetry and interactive reading.

"Don't miss out on the face painting, colouring and craft table and lots of giveaways," said Mrs. Smith. "A magic show will top off the afternoon."

At the end of each session there will be an opportunity to win door prizes. Refreshments will be available.
