An educational film about Muslims in US
A film about what it is like to be Muslim in the United States will be shown this month to raise money for the Clara Mohammed School in Hamilton. The film ‘Mooz-lum’ is written and directed by Qasim Basir, a young African-American Muslim. ‘Mooz-lum’ attacks Islamist extremism while offering audiences a rare and illuminating depiction of life as a Muslim in America.“Qasim has been successful in educating his audience about Muslims as well as counteracting the Islamophobia, pervasive after 9/11,” said film organiser Dr Ameenah Ahad.‘Mooz-lum’ was the 2010 winner of the Best Narrative prize at the Urbanworld Film Festival. It has received rave reviews from Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Los Angeles Times reviewer Kevin Thomas called it a “potent” feature debut for writer-director Mr Basir. An online reviewer commented: “President Obama said in his 2011 State of the Union Address: ‘American Muslims are part of the American family’….I strongly suggest non-Muslims take a leap of understanding the American family and go see this film.”Said Dr Ahad: “We invite and encourage you to attend and would welcome your patronage. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.”Tickets are $30 and $50 for patrons and available at Liberty Theatre and Brunswick Street Bakery.
