Elliot PTA raise cash for two worthy causes

While sponsors were hitting the green, the Elliot Primary PTA was collecting cash for two worthy causes at its first ever charity golf tournament. The school’s PTA raised between $4,000 and $5,000 for the family of a car crash victim and the Kaleidescope Arts Foundation, after a successful fundraising match last month.PTA president Traci Burgess said part of the funds would help assist Shernelle Outerbridge, a PTA board member involved in a serious car accident last January. The crash left her paralysed from the neck down and after undergoing six months of intensive rehabilitation overseas she is planning to return home later this month. The family is in need of cash for home renovations and private physical therapy sessions.Ms Burgess said: “The family has undergone emotional and financial stress and so when the PTA was made aware of the family’s need of assistance, including renovations to the house in order to prepare for her to come back home in a wheelchair, we decided to help.”Ms Burgess said: “She is a genuinely kind spirit. Anyone that has ever met or known her says she radiates positivity and love and kindness.“There are a lot of people coming on board to support her and the family through this recovery period.”She said Mrs Outerbridge was extremely positive about her homecoming and ready to continue with her motherly duties and her career.Kaleidescope Arts Foundation suffered financially after some of their private sponsorship was pulled and faced the possibility of closing its doors earlier this year, Ms Burgess said.“They do a lot to give back to the community and they worked with Elliot Primary School for a number of years. They have granted various scholarships and arts programmes to a lot of students so we decided to give back to them to help with some of their funding needs.”She lauded the charity for continously offering art scholarship programmes to the community. The golf tournament took place two weeks ago at the Belmont Hills Golf Club. A large cross-section of the community, including politicians and business executives, took part.Ms Burgess said the exact amount of money raised was not known.“Between Kaleidescope and the family we are hoping to have between $4,000 or $5,000 to split between the two. I think it’s great. It’s not as much as we had hoped to be able to provide for both of them because our registration numbers for the golf tournament were a little low, but then again we are still in a recession.”It is the PTA’s hope that the number of sponsors grow in future years and the charity golf event becomes bigger and better, Ms Burgess added“We did quite well and certainly made a very good impression on everyone that attended.”Additional monies raised will help the PTA erect two shaded areas on the school field to keep students out of the direct sunlight during sports days.
