Finding a solution to an age-old problem
The Conflict Resolution team of eight students from various local high schools was the winning overall team at the ninth Bermuda Youth Conference held recently at XL House.
Entitled ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’ the conference involved some 70 students from Saltus, Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, Warwick Academy, MSA and CedarBridge Academy. The teams were assigned group topics and missions and Team D, made up of Mathew Wedlick (Warwick Academy), Shannon Stearns (MSA), Courtney Chiappa (Saltus), Sophia Schwertl (BHS), Chelsea Warren (Bermuda Institute), Rhiannon Hodgson (Bermuda Institute), Marcus Bean (CedarBridge), Tatyanna Butterfield (CedarBridge) and India Burchall (Home school), dealt with conflict resolution and developed a national peace plan for the community.
The group identified circumstances and/or solutions which cause division, such as private school versus public school. They were tasked with gathering information that would bring a working solution and then to form an event or another method to bring about healing.
The students worked with 14 visiting students from the Barney School of Business at the University of Hartford over the two days, delivering presentations and business plans on the second day. The topics included:
n Education Motivation: Design a programme that will help the village to assist the children in primary, middle and senior school to increase their grades.
n Healing through Entertainment: To create a national campaign that brings together persons of all ages and diverse nationalities in an entertaining environment.
n Career Placement: Build a campaign that matches a child’s gift to his-her career potential.
n Conflict Resolution: Develop a national peace plan for the community.
n Modern Sex Education: To create a national awareness campaign that identifies and educates the village on modern day sexual pressures in our society.
n Economy assistance: given our current economic situation, design a programme that will assist in helping to stabilise the community.
