United Dance Productions are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a bang.Their latest showcase promises to deliver the high-energy and professionalism of some of the Island’s best dancers. The show will be take place at the City Hall Theatre for three days, starting tonight at 8pm.Suzette Harvey, UDP’s owner and founder, said: “The calibre of this performance will be at the level of any International show.“The show will be featuring some of our best dancers from the beginning days in 1992 right along through to some of our present day dancers.“It was a challenge because everyone has their favourite piece of choreography, but we have selected some of our very best repertoire from throughout the years and those are the pieces that we will perform.”She said staff and dancers have been working around the clock to ensure the performance is a success.“The hard work, sweat and dedication from the dancers has been phenomenal,” explained Ms Harvey. “They have been in the studio constantly reconnecting and rehearsing. The rewarding thing is they have come through the school, and as such understand the work ethic and how to rehearse themselves.“And I won’t say it has been a breeze, but it has made it that much easier for me and allowed me to focus on the layout of the showcase.”A total of 33 dancers will be performing, ranging in age from 11 to 40. Ms Harvey said the dancers have been trained in every discipline and will be showing off a range of contemporary and uplifting, fun pieces.Ms Harvey founded her dance studio in her mother’s backyard. Twenty years later, the company is still going strong, albeit at a more formal premises Alexandrina Hall on Court Street.She said: “I am proud of each and every dancer that will be performing on the stage over the three nights. Watching them in rehearsal has been overwhelming. To see them dance gives me the most gratification. “The dance instructor said she was particularly proud of the dancers that have gone on to pursue careers in the field, some of whom have been able to perform on stages around the world. Several of her dance students have returned and will be performing at the 20th anniversary showcase.Ms Harvey said: “The public should come out and see this performance as it will be a powerful show. They will get see young Bermudians in a positive light, exhibiting exceptional dance talent.“We in Bermuda are so ready to focus on the negative aspects of our youth but there is so many positive things that our young people are doing and many of these dancers have taken it on and are performing on the world stage.“We must embrace them now and reward them by coming out to see them, be supportive. These young people are our future leaders.”In lead up to the three-day show, Ms Harvey said she was feeling overwhelmed “to say the least”. She has found herself reflecting on the hard work, trials and tribulations she has encountered throughout the years.“You see we have always struggled to define ourselves, not as a black school, but as a dance school,” she said.“We have structure and we do have ballet, and after 20 years, a track record that has proven on an international level that our students are exceptional. They have received full scholarships at college auditions and we continue to have to define the school.”She added: “I am excited [about the performance] and I am inspired by every single dancer that is in the studio. I am emotional because it is nothing like seeing the fruits of your labour.“I am reaping the rewards of the hard work over these 20 years. I have had some strange emotions run through my system — it’s a lot to digest — 20 years of teaching dance.”Showcase tickets — $45 and $50 — are available from the downstairs office at The Liberty Theatre or at the door. A special ticket rate of $25 is available for tonight’s show.
