Artists embrace ‘culturally competent society’

Homage to Picasso's Three Musicians by Sue Pearson and daughter Shelley.

The latest art show on at Common Ground Cafe in Hamilton presents a collaborative exploration into the meaning and implication of the word “native”.The show, hosted by Select Palette Art (SPART) is a mixed media co-operative effort between artists Ami Zanders and Milton Hill. Mr Hill will be including some of the cedar carving he is well known for on the Island, and Ms Zanders will be exhibiting some of her silk screening work.“For this show, I have done something special,” said Mr Hill. “I had to size down my work, because the space was limited.”“Their combined talents of silk screening and cedar carving offers a uniquely Bermudian experience,” said SPART Curator Sue Pearson. “In exploring the word ‘native’ the artists found themselves embracing various interpretations of culture. The show further evolved into a celebration of a culturally competent society.”Other artists with work on display will be Ronnie Chameau, Keitha Bassett, Cathy Ann Hansey, Mark Henderson and Kendra L Earls.Ms Pearson will make a special contribution to the show by making a popular mural ‘Homage to Picasso’s Three Musicians’, located on Chancery Lane opposite Common Ground Cafe, available on canvas for the first time. The mural was originally painted over Cup Match in 2006 by Ms Pearson and daughter Shelley. The mural has been reproduced to canvas and will available for sale at $800 a print. The proceeds of this limited edition work will go directly to the food bank programme at Wesley Methodist Church. The food bank programme collects non perishable food and then distributes it to needy members of the community.“This Church Street congregation continues to provide this highly needed and graciously received service,” said Ms Pearson. “Please come and enjoy our exhibition. We hope to captivate the ‘Bermuda Native’ in all of us.”The show opens on September 27 from 5.30pm to 7pm at Common Ground Cafe at 11 Chancery Lane in Hamilton and runs until November 28.
