Fun for all during Police Week

Residents young and old are invited to run, cycle and play their way through Police Week 2012.Starting tomorrow with the popular Gymkhana event at Police Field from 10am until 4pm, families are encouraged to come out for week of fun-filled activities.Police spokeswoman Mica Murray said: “We are encouraging parents to come out and support their children at this family event.”Buses to the field will depart from Double Dip Express in St David’s and the Somerset Police Station tomorrow at 8.45am.Transportation for children back to the pick-up location can be arranged with members of the Gymkhana committee should parents need assistance, Ms Murray said.Police Week activities continue Sunday with an inter-faith service at CedarBridge Academy cafeteria, from 10am to 11am. Religious texts from various faiths will be read and there will also be a special performance by the Bermuda Police Service Choir.Other activities for the week are as follows:Monday: An awards ceremony honouring police officers, support staff and community partners, at CedarBridge Academy’s Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, starting at 5pm.Tuesday: Police displays at Police Field and a seniors’ tea at Prospect Police Recreation Club at noon. Schools are asked to RSVP by phoning 247-1776.Wednesday: Student winners of the Commissioner for a Day artwork and essay competition will be at Police Headquarters from 9am until 2pm. The general public is invited to attend open house events at Hamilton, Somerset or Southside police stations. A Beat the Retreat ceremony, in conjunction with the Bermuda Regiment, will take place along Front Street from 7.30pm.Thursday: Officers will compete, and show off their intramural and team athletic skills at a sports day at Police Field starting at 9am.Friday: A memorial ceremony and tribute to those who lost their lives whilst serving the Bermuda Police Service. To be held in the Military Cemetery, off Alexandra Road, Devonshire, starting at 4pm. The ceremony will be followed by a BBQ at Prospect Police Recreation Club for ex, former and retired officers.Saturday: Constable of the Year, Support Staff of the Year, Reserve of the Year and other awards to be presented at an invitation-only event at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.Useful website: www.police.bm.
