Get into the Christmas spirit at St Mark’s

Experience the joy of the Christmas season with a range of carols spanning the ages this weekend at St Mark’s Church Hall. The Ensemble Singers, directed by Angela Sainsbury, will perform Carol of the Bells, an Evening of Christmas Music tomorrow and Sunday. The programme will include music from the 13th century right up until modern times.“The whole point of the concert is to share the love and joy of the Christmas season through beautiful music,” said Ms Sainsbury. This will be her first year directing the group, which has performed Christmas concerts for many years.“I think the music is what will make the concert special. We will be singing some uplifting Christmas music.”Ian Cummings, who has been singing with the group since 2000, said the music chosen was quite appealing.“There is a real mixture of very old music and traditional modern music,” he said. “We will be singing ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’ for example, which was first sung in the 15th century. We will also be singing ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas’ and John Gardner’s ‘Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day’ and ‘Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire’.”He said one of his favourite pieces on the schedule was ‘Personent Hodie’ a Medieval Latin song.“It is very powerful,” he said. “The choir perform it well, and Angela even said it gave her tingles the other night.”Ms Sainsbury said she tells the group that the whole point of music is to communicate a feeling.“That is where the real magic happens, when the performers are able to communicate that feeling to the audience,” she said. “It doesn’t always happen at every performance that singers are able to open themselves to the audience. You have to be a bit fearless in your expression to do it.”The concert will be at 7.30pm tomorrow and on Sunday at 4.30pm. General admission is $30; $20 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at Music Box and from members of The Ensemble Singers.
