The ninth annual Fishing Tournament sponsored by Robinson’s Marina at Somerset Bridge and off from The Scaur proved to be grand success, with enthusiastic community support both on the day of the event more than a fortnight ago and again at the prize presentation this week at the West End Sail Boat Club.

“It has been overwhelming,” said Malcolm Swan, Manager of the Marina as well as chairman of the 2012 Committee. His sentiments were echoed by Committee Member Joseph (Joey) Robinson, saying: “This is truly a community event getting bigger and more exciting as the years go by.”

He was alluding both to the numbers who put to sea in their boats with their rods and reels, and family members, friends and curious spectators causing traffic jams as they flock to the marina to see the boats return, watch the weigh-in and to feast on the catches, which are fried on the spot by volunteer cooks.

Additionally, the seafood is supplemented by additional volunteers who usually bring coleslaw, beets, macaroni and cheese, chicken, white rice, Spanish rice, rolls and various desserts. Mr Robinson said: “Pompano Beach Club has consistently sent us tasty desserts prepared by their chefs.

“Seniors are seated in the shade and fed first. The younger generations roam around the dock talking to friends and observing the fishermen’s catch.”

After the fishermen and seniors are fed the rest of the observers are lined up and given a plate of tasty food.

There is no charge but a donation could be made and later presented to a charity. The beneficiary this year was the Packwood Home.

There are three main categories for the fishermen which are designated by the depth of water that they are allowed to fish. The first category is ‘Inshore A’ which is from the shore line to nine fathoms.

The second category is ‘Inshore B’ which extends from nine fathoms to 29 fathoms and the third category goes from 29 fathoms to an unlimited depth.

In addition, each category is divided into Male and Female Juniors, Seniors and Masters.

Prizes are awarded for the champions of each of the categories., as well as prizes for those who have caught the largest fish in certain designated species. The larger fish are weighed, particulars recorded and pictures taken.

Manager of Robinson's Marina and Chairman of the 2012 Robinson's Marina Fishing Tournament Committee, Malcolm Swan presented prizes to champions in the 9th Annual event. The prize-giving was at the West End Sail Boat Club, and it proved to be another outstanding tournament social event. Above Packwood Home Board Member Kenneth Randolph Scott was presented a cheque by committee members for $2000 representing donations received at the 'on-the-spot feast' immediately following the 5 pm. weigh-in at the 9th Annual Tournament.
