Budding young filmmakers who submitted short videos in celebration of Earth Day have the chance to win a host of prizes next week.

Greenrock and the Bermuda National Trust will screen the films at Bermuda College in Room H100 on Monday from 6pm to 7pm.

Prizes will be awarded to students who showed the most creativity, successfully conveyed a message and presented an informative video.

They range from a Dolphin Quest encounter to a tour of the former Casemates Prison.

Ten short videos, ranging in length from two to four minutes, were made by middle and high school students from around the Island on the theme: ‘What should we be doing differently to save the Earth?’

Greenrock president Judith Landsberg said young people had an important part to play in saving our planet.

“We hear constantly about how bad things are for our planet; if things are going to change then our young people are the ones to make it happen,” she said.

“We think the health of the planet is important, but it is even more important to our children and students; they have to live with the consequences of our decisions. This is an opportunity to hear from them and hear their ideas.”

Bermuda National Trust education director Cindy Corday said many students were technologically-savvy and interested in having a voice.

“This experience is a creative way to tie technology to a very important issue that will ultimately have an impact on their future,” she added.

The competition was supported by Dolphin Quest, the National Museum of Bermuda and the Liberal Arts Division of the Bermuda College.
