Summer camp will provide Miles of Smiles
Golfing, snorkelling and cooking — it’s all there in a new summer camp that will show local children the wonders of their Island home.Karla Lacey, chief executive officer of Bermuda Hospitality Institute (BHI) will kick off the Miles of Smiles camp for students, eight to 13 years old, next month.Students will learn about Bermuda culture and activities by experiencing them first hand.“This summer camp was created with one goal in mind: showcasing Bermuda’s hospitality industry by engaging kids in a fun and meaningful way,” said Ms Lacey. “Kids are guaranteed a great time each week through a variety of special activities, as well as behind the scenes access that they otherwise would not have.”The camp runs weekly throughout July and August. Each week will focus on a different part of the Island. Every day will start off with a lesson in hospitality at the BHI offices in Hamilton, then campers will be off to explore.Ms Lacey has a long history of teaching young people cooking and nutrition. She started the Junior Chef Central programme in the United States several years ago, so naturally the camp wouldn’t be hers with out some dicing and chopping.“Every camp includes a chef led cooking lesson at International Imports (The Chefs Shop), followed by a dining etiquette and table setting lesson at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess,” said Ms Lacey. “There’s also a ‘sporting’ element with professional instructors, tours of guest houses, hotels and cultural hot spots. We’ve mirrored the best Bermuda has to offer by incorporating ecological and cultural activities both on land and sea.”Highlights of the camp will include a behind the scenes tour of LF Wade International Airport, a golf lesson and power snorkel trips, among other things. Each week of the camp will have a different theme, and there will be a maximum of 12 students per week. The cost is $325 per person and includes all activities. There is also limited financial assistance available for those who need it.Full camp details, with the daily outline of weekly activities can be found outline at www.BHI.bm.
