It was a case of ‘As you were’ at the Bermuda Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation’s (BBBFF) 26th Annual Night of Champions as all of the big prizes went to former winners. The always popular event was held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Saturday night and once again enjoyed near-capacity patronage. As usual, friends, supporters, and well-wishers were in full voice throughout the evening, making the event a virtually interactive affair. The show started at 7pm with an awesome Martial Arts demonstration by nine-year-old fitness enthusiast Niyan Outerbridge.Young Mr Outerbridge exhibited impressive skill, flexibility, and power for his age, and was duly rewarded with adoration from the crowd. After a few words from BBBFF President Candy-Lee Foggo, the traditional parade of competitors graced the stage. The large group of 35 contestants drew copious cheers from the audience, and heightened the excitement of the competition at hand.In the Fitness categories Deon Breary took the Women’s Bikini Fitness award, while Nicole Tovey overcame an impressive fitness routine by newcomer Samantha Harries to take the Women’s Fitness class, and Yves Paul held off a spirited effort by Eston Rawlins to capture the Men’s Fitness Crown. The Physique classes were next. Familiar faces dominated the Women’s Figure Fitness classes, with Sabrina Burgess and Shameela Simons each defending their respective under five feet, four inches and over five feet, four inch crowns. Then, in another repeat of the 2012 result, Mrs Burgess was named the 2013 Ms Figure Fitness after another intense pose down. The Men’s Physique Class was easily the most hotly contested of the night, with reigning Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Champion Hafid James fighting off strong challenges from relative newcomers Bernard Opoku and Kyle Santucci.Mr James was imperious once again, separating himself from the impressive Opoku and much improved Santucci by the slimmest of margins to reign supreme for a second year running. The Men’s Bodybuiding classes also produced the same results as last year.Jeftha Miller took the crown in the Men’s Classic Bodybuilding category, holding off a game Deon Brangman Jr once again, and veteran Javaughn Dill bested Duane Dill and Raymond Burchall to retain the title of Mr. Bermuda.Mr Dill was named Mr Bermuda 2013, and awarded the Scott Lauder Memorial Cup during the prize presentation ceremony for a second year running.Mr Miller was named the ‘Best Artistic Poser, Male’ for the second year running as well. The Women’s Bodybuilding class produced a mild surprise when former champion Sue Rebello was named Ms Bermuda 2013 over Marina Jean-Pierre.Mrs Jean-Pierre appeared to have enough size and muscle definition to take the Women’s title, but the veteran Rebello walked away with the heavy metal statuette, the title, and the award for ‘Best Artistic Poser, Female.’The most poignant part of the evening came just after intermission, when Claire Ann Moore, a woman confined to a wheelchair due to complications related to Scoliosis, Cerebral Palsy, and Polio walked onto the RSJ stage with the aid of a walker and an assistant.Ms Moore lauded the efforts of the Seaview Ultimate Fitness Center staff in helping her to accomplish this very special feat, and she was duly rewarded with an instant standing ovation. It was a thoroughly moving, miraculous, and inspiring moment indeed! The evening ran well from start to finish, and the crowd was quite enthusiastic throughout (which was quite a feat, considering the four-hour run time of the event).Host Mr. Wendell Dill was funny, charming and composed, giving the event a distinct touch of class. Acting Premier Michael Dunkley joined Dion Smith and One Bermuda Alliance politician Jeff Sousa to present the awards, and the event was hailed a success on every level.
