Pianist Nusound hosts concert to showcase local talent

Hosting concert: Musician Aisha Nusound, pictured with her instrumental piano album 'Heartstrings'

Bermudian pianist Aisha Nusound will be showcasing her first inspirational concert involving fellow young adults. The concert will take place on August 31 at the Heritage Worship Centre at 7.30pm. Artistic performances will include piano instrumentals, original compositions, vocals and spoken word. Ms Nusound started taking piano lessons at the young age of ten. Six years later after stopping her piano lessons, she was still immersed in music and drawn to the piano with a strong passion. Aisha spoke with The Royal Gazette about her upcoming concert and more.Q: Who/what inspired ‘The Sound’ concert?A: The Sound Concert was inspired by a desire to have local youth and young adults come together to share their various talents and gifts. Bermudians are full of talent and this is to showcase those talents all in the name of giving God the glory with our gifts. The theme of the concert is based on the scripture Acts 2:1-2 which talks about there being a sound of a rushing wind as God moved in the lives of people who came together and united in one vision and one goal. This is exactly what we are expecting on the night, that as we come together God will move in the lives and hearts of each person there through the songs, vocals and talents shared.Q: What can we expect from the performance?A: I will be playing several songs from my album “Heartstrings”, which was released in January and is available online for streaming at www.soundcloud.com/aisha-nusound. We will also be debuting songs that myself and my brother Alex Bassett wrote, which will be sung by local vocalists. There will be moving and personal spoken words which will touch on important and personal life experiences of the young writers.Q: What are you looking forward to in this concert?A: As far as I know there has never been an event like this before: one that showcases Christians in the performing arts where music, sounds, vocals and words merge to create one voice and one sound. I am excited to see local talent come together all in the name of using our talents for God’s glory. I believe that people will see and be encouraged and we hope that other youth are encouraged to step out and use their talents for ministering and reaching out to others.Q: What are you hoping to accomplish through this event?A: Firstly we expect that others lives will be touched, encouraged and changed and for them to want a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Music is a personal expression of my heart and I believe that people will be touched and ministered to by the music as I play from my heart. The poets are very transparent and talk about many of their personal struggles and life experiences so in that sense we believe that their transparency will show a side of being a Christian that people may not have shared before. We hope that this event encourages people of all ages, especially youth and young adults to come out of their shells and out of hiding from being shy or ashamed to use their unique talents. We want them to see that there is a place for them to use their unique talents and different as they may be, there is a place for them to use it to build God’s kingdom and that they don’t have to conform to the norm or change themselves or go outside of God’s purpose for them to fulfil their talents or go to a place where they could be used or their talents exploited. We truly believe that this event, the Sound, is only the beginning. Bermudians are packed with talented people and we want to use this concert as a platform to show it and encourage others to use their unique gifts for Jesus.Q: Do you have a special message/theme?A: The theme of the Sound is that all the artists will be coming together uniting to make one sound praising Jesus. The Sound will express the realities of Christian young adults through the various performing arts.Q: How can others benefit from this concert?A: They can come out and experience Bermuda’s raw talent and the Christian performing arts in a way that they may have not ever done before. It will be a night like never before.Q: Who are the organisers of this concert?A: The committee is made of Alex Bassett, Aisha Bassett, Yrima Todd and Pahn-ya RatterayQ: What inspires you to be a musician?A: Music is my God-given gift. I use it to express myself, my emotions, my feeling and as worship to God. Music is like a universal language and so much can be communicated through each sound and note. It crosses racial and cultural boundaries and that is powerful.Music is my passion, it’s my voice and it allows me to be free and freestyle playing exactly what’s on my heart. What inspires me to create songs is everything around me. As I am walking around sometimes musical notes and melodies “pop” into my mind and from there I go to the piano and a song develops. Most times the song develops as I play what’s on my heart at that moment so I usually record myself when I am playing. I use it as an outlet to express how I’m feeling.Q: How do you feel about this upcoming concert?A: I am so excited! This is my first concert ever and I’m happy to be having it at home, in Bermuda. It’s a great feeling of fulfillment when you have a vision for an event and with an awesome visionary team, support, planning and prayer it comes into being. I am really looking forward to playing and to collaborating with all the awesome and talented individuals that will be performing and ministering on the night. I myself love the spoken word and find it thought-provoking and personally challenging, so I am looking forward to the entire night and to what God will do in the lives of everyone there.Q: How have the responses been so far?A: Responses have been good. Many have been supported and many have taken interest in the events of the night and shared in our excitement about the event. We would love to see people of all ages come out and be a part of The Sound.Q: Do you have any additional comments that you would like to add?A: After considering the idea and recording many songs I released my first piano instrumental album in January 2013 titled “Heartstrings”. Heartstrings mean deepest feelings or emotions and that is exactly what music is to me. Each song on the album tells the story of something I’ve been through in my life up to now or is just my expression of worship and gratitude to Jesus for His sacrifice and salvation. Music is my most personal expression of what I am feeling at the moment. I have had the opportunity to play locally at her church along with various churches, events and youth conferences ranging from Montreal, Canada; Norwich and London, England; and Belize, Central America.Tickets for the Sound are $25 general, $50 patron, $75 patron gold and $10 for children under 12 years of age.
