Four pianists are about to hit the stage at The Bermuda International Church Piano and Jazz Festival.Out of 30 highly accomplished pianists, four were chosen to take part in The Bermuda International Church Piano & Jazz Festival: Conrad Roach, Elizabeth Gumbs, Marvin Roach and Sheldon Fox II.Each pianist will perform one song alone, one with a soloist or instrument and one with The Giant Steps Band. The festival will take place on September 8 at St Paul’s AME Church at 4pm. Event originator and committee chairperson Dale Butler said: “I am hoping this will grow into an annual event and we will attract more overseas players. Lined up for October 20 is Dr Wayne A Bucknor from Alabama. He is a distinguished Professor of music with exceptional skills who has trained some of the Bermudian participants. We have limited the seating to avoid certain areas in the church where viewing is not at its best. Although everyone will not be able to see all musicians they will certainly hear them.”In hopes that the festival will grow as an international event, Mr Butler said: “We are already organising part two for October 20. This is an effort to showcase Bermuda’s number one jazz band (Giant Steps) with some excellent pianist. And we will release two new groups: The Sweet Cherries of North Rock and The Ripe Loquats of Pond Hill. It will be a wonderful afternoon of spirit filled music.”While Mr Butler was Minister of Culture he was inspired to develop this event. St. Paul’s AME Church has agreed to work along with his group Atlantic Publishing House and Darlene Hartley’s ‘My Thyme Productions’. This event promises to inspire young musicians and bring the Word of God to the audience in song with a theme of “How To Reach The Masses”. Mr. Butler adds: “The whole concert is exceptional and I know people want to know what the loquats and cherries are about.”Tickets are $35 and are available for purchase at the St Paul’s AME Church office.
