MacPhees to perform at Folk Club

Performing this weekend: Alana and Mike MacPhee

It is going to be a special night the Bermuda Folk Club this Saturday as two former regulars return to the stage for the first time since they departed the Island two years ago.Mike and Alana MacPhee and many of the Island performers they either worked alongside or performed with during the 2000s will gather to share a night of music at the Spanish Point Boat Club in Pembroke.Among those expected on the night are Joy Barnum, Milton Raposo, Michael Cacy and ‘The Beautiful Randys’.For many years guitarist Mr MacPhee was a mainstay at the club. He made his debut performance in 2004 shortly after arriving in Bermuda.“The Folk Club is a special place for us. It was there that Alana started singing in a non-classical way and it is where I started playing after a roommate suggested it,” said Mr MacPhee. The couple moved to St John’s, Newfoundland, in 2011, where they have been writing songs. “We have kept with the music and have been collaborating and writing songs, probably a bit more than we did when we were here,” said Mr MacPhee.Since arriving on the Island this week the MacPhees have been busy rehearsing for the show, which will feature between 45 and 60 minutes of their own original compositions, and also a number of Newfoundland folk songs. At various points during the evening guest performers will join the couple on stage. As well as those already mentioned, Johann Oosthuizuen, lead singer with ‘The Knock Ons’ with whom Mr MacPhee once played, is due to perform, as are Jamie Lovell and Phil Morrison. A jam session featuring all the assembled musicians is expected to be the grand finale for the evening which, weather permitting, will take place outdoors.Doors open at 7.30pm.
