Un-Tai yourself from stress

A Tai Home Spa client receives a cup of ginger tea

The Tai Home Spa, which opened its doors this Spring, focuses on the application of the therapies they offer.Located in a bungalow at 14 Laffan Street, the Asian-styled emporium of beauty and soothing treatments is managed by Bhola Bhattarai, who has worked for Arab royalty and at spas as far afield as Dubai. He explained the exotic spa is primarily aimed at Bermuda residents.Like many spas, the experience begins at arrival. When a person is ushered inside the elegant Thai style entrance lounge, decorated with dark wood with precious metal details, they are handed a particularly gingery ginger tea — a warm, refreshing and relaxing beverage which helps them to sink into deep relaxation in the rich and elegant surroundings. Mr Bhattarai explained: “Ginger tea is good for your respiratory system; it is a detox and it’s also relaxing and helps to settle your stomach.”Of the many facials the therapists Tai Home Spa gives, I had been asked to have a ‘luxury facial’ which would last an hour, in order to describe the treatmentCertainly most facials will include a cleansing, a toning, exfoliation, and a mask to further cleanse or moisturise. At the Tai Home Spa, the products are all from Thailand and are described as organic; they smell beautiful, and feel silky and pleasant. However, at Tai Home Spa it is the application of the products and the series of massage techniques the therapists use which sets them apart. There is no sense of rush, and Jan, my therapist, was fastidious, thorough, but very gentle. And at the end, it did make a real difference to my skin. The cost is $79 for the promotional special. The variety of massages offered by Tai Home Spa demonstrate that it is a speciality for them. Their four hands massage is one that stands out among their offerings. They describe it as “ ... also known as the Ocean Waves therapy, it is a form of massage therapy performed by two therapists. It is a way of stimulating unique sensations and producing many benefits within a relatively short session.“There is no doubt that the four-hand massage is very enjoyable; it has been recognised as one of the more popular treatments we have to offer.”They also offer a Thai massage. Tai Home Spa states: “(It) is also called Thai yoga massage, because the therapist uses his or her hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Muscle compression, joint mobilisation, and acupressure are also used during the treatment. People describe Thai massage as both relaxing and energising. Thai massage is usually done on a padded mat on the floor. No oil is applied, so you are fully dressed. You are usually asked to bring or wear comfortable clothing to the massage.”Prices for facials and massages start at $89.Body treatments include a body scrub, wrap and massage designed for “softening the new skin and improving circulation, leaving a fresh and healthy skin.” Their Tai full body scrub is a stress treatment as well as promising to bring your skin “back to superb radiance.”A mud wrap is to help dryness, rashes or flakiness. Prices start at $59.The Tai Home Spa has six therapists including Mr Bhattarai, one of whom has recently arrived. He said: “We have a new therapist Alin who started with us last week. Alin has over six years experience working in top spas around the world. As part of the introductory promotion, we are providing a 15 percent discount on all massages and facials if booked with Alin,” he said.At the Tai Home Spa, you may also have your ears ‘candled’, a controversial treatment for the removal of wax from your ears, which involves placing a lit, hollow, cone-shaped candle into the ear canal. The theory behind ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal auricular therapy, is that the heat from the flame will create suction that draws the earwax into the hollow candle. Ear candling has also been touted as a treatment for sinus infections and as a way to improve hearing. In addition, the spa offers a special facial for men, and it also has a manicure and pedicure room with massage chairs. There are sauna and steam rooms which are free of charge for any treatment over $99, and an outdoor lounge.Gift certificates are available, and there is plenty of parking.
