Pregnant? There’s an app for that. In fact, there’s tons of smartphone applications designed specifically for expectant and/or new parents. Bearing in mind a recent study found that almost half of all health applications downloaded this year were related to pregnancy, here are some of the top ones:

Total Baby. This app is considered one of the top baby apps. It tracks just about everything — diaper changes, nursing, pumping, bottles, solids, sleeping, and bathing. It can be used by several people, so the child’s caregiver can update it during the day and keep mom and dad informed. It is available on iTunes for $4.99, requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimised for iPhone 5.

Web MD Baby provides hundreds of articles about baby health. It also tracks diaper changes, sleep patterns and growth. This app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch although it works best with iPhone 5. Download it for free on iTunes.

Pilates for Pregnancy is an app for the mother-to-be who is looking to stay fit and strong. It provides safe Pilates workouts tailored to the woman’s pregnancy trimester. Take advantage of the app’s convenient workout guides, but don’t miss out on the journal, photo, development tracker, and planner features. It’s yours, for $9.99.

iContraction allows you to more easily time your contractions as labour begins. Users have pointed out however, that as labour intensifies, the last thing a woman wants to do is mess with her smartphone. Perhaps the best move would be to teach your delivery partner how to use the programme. It requires iOS 2.0 or later and costs 99 cents on iTunes. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

My Baby’s Beat lets parents hear their baby’s heartbeat using an iPhone and a set of headphones. It costs $3.99 and doesn’t require any special hardware, only your iPhone microphone and a pair of headphones.

Baby Names Wizard provides a variety of ways to discover the best baby names. Browse or search by meaning or origin to see the most popular names. The app also has a fun, random name generator, which helps you discover names you might not have considered otherwise. It is available for 99 cents on iTunes.

iBirth offers a series of informative videos on pregnancy and delivery. The cost is $3.99 and it is available on iTunes and, for android users, on Google Play. It works on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and many other android devices that have iOS 4.0 or later.
