BEPRO donates to fund helping woman fighting cancer

Nakia Smith, husband of cancer patient Kamala Smith, accepts a donation from Sharmaine Landy, Marketing and Communications Director for The Bermuda’s Emerging Professionals (BEPRO); alongside an unnamed family friend.

A mother fighting a rare form of cancer has received financial boost from The Bermuda’s Emerging Professionals (BEPRO) organisation.

BEPRO recently donated funds given by attendees at a BEPRO networking event, to Kamala Smith and her family to help with medical expenses during treatment.

Ms Smith, a newlywed, was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, or LMS, a cancer of the smooth muscle and connective tissues, when she was 29.

After being clear of cancer for two years, doctors recently found it was back. She is 31.

A cheque for the received funds was presented to Nakia Smith, Mrs Smith’s husband, on May 15 at The Bermuda Chamber of Commerce by Sharmaine Landy, current Marketing and Communications Director for BEPRO; alongside a close family friend and former BEPRO Board member.

Mr Smith expressed genuine gratitude upon receipt, stating ‘every little bit counts,’ and thanked the organisation for their selfless contribution.

BEPRO also reached out to another member of the community dealing with cancer earlier this year in an effort to assist in making their ‘fight’ a little less stressful and the organisation is happy to report that the individual is improving significantly and growing stronger every day.

“BEPRO is extremely dedicated to serving the community whenever possible and continues to push community involvement among its membership of emerging and established professionals,” said Ms Landy. “The organisation wholeheartedly believes that selfless giving in all forms is equally as important as building professional skills while creating valuable network connections.”

BEPRO would also like to take this time to encourage the community to support the upcoming Relay for Life initiative in aid of funding crucial cancer research.
