Bring together a graphic designer, a guy with a great eye for fashion and a young business student — and what do you get?Gombey — a new clothing and fashion accessories brand for young people, created by Kadeem Abraham and brothers Teniko and Jahde Eve.They recently released the brand's first product, a snapback hat featuring the Bermuda/Gombey logo. But have big dreams for where the brand can eventually go and plan to create T-shirts, backpacks, hoodies and maybe even sneakers in the future.Jahde, 24, said the three men came together with the idea of creating a Bermudian label geared towards youth, rather than the typical pieces that are better suited for tourists.“We had been talking about starting a clothing line for years,” Jahde said. “Teniko, my brother, has always found the boastiest hats and T-shirts and has a good eye for the next trends and finding things that are cool.“Meanwhile, I went to school with Kadeem, who's a graphic designer, and he has always been drawing different logos and designs. He was the one that could actually implement our ideas.“I studied finance and international business at New York University (NYU) so it was important to have all three of us on board.”They started pursuing the idea more seriously last year. Then while brainstorming they threw out a few brand names and 'Gombey' stuck. Not only was it 'obviously Bermudian', but they also felt it was a name with global appeal.“If anyone were to hear the word 'gombey', even if the don't know what it is, it sounds nice off the tongue,” Jahde said.“Historically the Gombeys were seen as being defiant because it was started by the slaves to give them an outlet against their slave masters.“It's always been a sign of rebellion and they were largely misunderstood. And while the youth of today don't have anything close to the same struggles people did back then, there is the same air of rebelliousness and misunderstanding between the older and younger generation.”Although they don't want the brand to represent anything political, they hope people will support it as being something 'cool and fresh' and because its produced by young Bermudians.According to Teniko, 23, the start-up business has run very smooth so far.“Our product is very well liked and we've been starting to get our name out there,” he said.“Starting up any business always bears the risk that you may lose the starting capital that you first put in. Other than that we were very efficient in finding a good supplier to produce the hats.”Teniko said the snapback hats were still just a “test run” for the lifestyle brand, but he admitted it was wonderful to see positive responses pour in from friends and the wider community.“We are currently finishing our logo for the brand and will be bringing in some new hats as well as T-shirts very soon,” he said. “In the next two years I hope that we will have a physical presence in Bermuda, whether that be in a local store or our own shop.”He said ever since he was younger, he and Jahde would toil with the idea of starting their own clothing line. He's ecstatic it's finally become a reality.“Gombeys are such a unique aspect of our Island which nobody has ever tampered with on a creative level clothing wise,” he said. “As we incorporate our logo into our hats and shirts, people will really see how unique our brand is and why it sets us apart from other local lines.”Kadeem said the best part of being a new entrepreneur was the experience itself and getting to explore ideas together.Doing it as part of a team has also been a great bonus, he said.“Teniko, Jahde and I decided to join together because we see a lot of lines that don't necessarily represent us [youth] and we wanted to do just that,” Kadeem said.“There are a lot of creative individuals in Bermuda with awesome lines (such as Omejae Goater, Alshuntae Furbert and Kiara Richardson) that are more in tune with current trends.“And though we are also leading in that direction I think ours is doing so with the idea of being Bermudian as an overarching theme.”The Gombey snapback hats currently sell for $25.
