Etana promises sizzling set of good vibes

Fan favourite: Etana, real name Shauna McKenzie, praises Bermudian audiences as very knowledgeable about music

Etana has performed here multiple times — fans know to expect a good show. The reggae singer has vowed to deliver a “good vibe” at the Bermuda Easter Fiesta on Thursday.

“My fans know how I do it and those who don’t know are about to see,” she said.

“It’s always good vibes in Bermuda, always a lot of people who are knowledgeable about the music and real fans who know real music and are full of vibes.

“I’m just hoping that I come back to the audience with that same kind; full of energy.”

The Jamaican singer-songwriter, record producer and guitarist was born Shauna McKenzie.

She’s been riding a wave since the release of her fourth album, I Rise, in October 2014. It stayed on top of the Billboard Reggae Album chart for four weeks — the first time a female artist had done so in nearly two decades.

More recently, she’s been busy working on new material and preparing for a tour this year.

“I have studio sessions all the way until July,” she said.

“That’s when we actually stop recording because I have to go on tour. July, September and October I will be all over the place. It never stops.”

She gets her inspiration from reggae legend Bob Marley and R&B star Whitney Houston. She also has great respect and admiration for “the empress of reggae”, Marcia Griffiths.

“I love good music and so I can’t say one particular genre would be enough for me because I just love great songs,” she said.

“Marcia Griffiths is like a friend to me, the sweetest personality in a woman that I have ever seen that’s not a blood relative. She is just an awesome person.”

• See Etana at the National Sports Centre. The show starts at 9pm. Tickets are $55 in advance at ptix.bm, or $85 at the gate. For more information call 295-3016
