Twelfth Night delights theatregoers

Imagine a delightful evening at the theatre, full of song, dance, laughter and drama.

You are sitting in the intimate setting of the Earl Cameron Theatre looking at a beautiful pastel set, with actors dressed in elegant cream-coloured outfits reminiscent of La Belle Epoque of the years prior to the First World War. You are enthralled with the plot, laughing at the gags and suddenly you become part of the action when actors pull you in as an extra!

Well, no need to imagine any longer. You have a chance to experience it for yourself tonight at the Bermuda Festival.

Last night’s performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night offered all that and more to the enthusiastic audience in the nearly sold-out production. The standing ovation and the smiles on the faces of theatre-goers made it clear that they had seen a piece of theatre that was not only entertaining, but allowed them to experience acting and directing at a high level.

This production, originally staged for the Midsummer Scene Festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia and restaged for Vienna’s English Theatre features experienced London-based Shakespearean actors, including Bermuda’s own Jason Eddy.

Director Helen Tennison describes the story as “a comedy of mistaken identity, social position and most of all love in all its rich variety”. And a comedy it is! Duke Orsino loves the lady Olivia who in turn is enamoured of Cesario, who is in the service of Orsino.

However, Cesario is not a man, but a young lady, Viola, in disguise. Meanwhile, her twin brother, whom she thought drowned in the shipwreck that brought them to this country, appears on the scene causing more problems of mistaken identity. The comic subplot involving members of Olivia’s household provides more confusion and mayhem.

Look out for a full review of this show in the coming days and don’t miss your last chance to see Twelfth Night tonight at 8.00 at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall.
