US<\p>woman faces fraud trial today
An American woman accused of participating in a $1.4 million fraud against the Bermuda Government is due to go on trial in New York City today.
Teketa Thompkins is alleged to have conspired with Bermudian management accountant Harrison Isaac Jnr to swindle the Accountant General’s Department. According to the indictment, she and Isaac — an employee of the department — looted an account it held with the Bank of New York.
The money was allegedly channelled into accounts in the names of two companies belonging to Thompkins in Atlanta, Georgia.
In addition to conspiring in the fraud, Thompkins, 33, from Georgia, is also accused of wire fraud and money laundering. She denies all the charges.
Isaac, 35, from Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty to fraud charges totalling almost $2 million earlier this year. He is currently serving a prison sentence of four years and seven months in the US.
A number of Bermuda Government officials and Police officers are expected to give evidence in Thompkins’ trial at the US District Court in Manhattan.
