The Bishop's story

THE ANGLICAN Bishop of Bermuda, the Rt. Rev. Ewen Ratteray’s journey with the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity began with his baptism by Bishop Arthur Heber Browne.Bishop Ratteray said as a teenager he came under the influence of Canon William Manning, who encouraged him to become a server.

He promptly joined a group of servers that included former Hamilton Mayor, Lawson Mapp, Martin Brewer, Walter Carlington and Henry Ming.

“It was in the Cathedral that I was confirmed at the age of 16. Due to the influence of the Canon, who later became a Bishop in South Africa, I went away to Codrington College in Barbados to study for the priesthood,” he recalled.

“After many years working in the North of England, I returned to Bermuda as Rector of Pembroke in 1980.”

In 1994 he was collated as Archdeacon of Bermuda in the Cathedral, and two years later was consecrated as the Bishop of the Diocese by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the chief consecrator.

“So the Cathedral has been the scene of many highly significant events in my life from infancy until the present,” he said.

“I have a great affection for this beautiful building because of its role in my life; for in it, God has on more than one occasion, called me to serve him in particular ways.”

Explaining the ongoing renovations to the Cathedral, Bishop Ratteray said its preservation and enhancement, as a place of prayer and tranquillity for the benefit of all people, is of the greatest importance to him.
