'Hustle Truck' gets its start
Short on rent? Just got laid off? The Hustle Truck has the answer. Bermuda Housing Corporation unveiled the new programme Thursday and 14 young men are already benefiting from the $18 an hour job.
The men are bussed to areas across the Island for manual labour. Right now they are clearing out a BHC property in Middle Town and getting rid of unsightly graffiti surrounding the home. Senator David Burch, who is Minister of Housing, said the aim was to give people a hand up - not a hand out.
He said: “We thought we would start with our properties and doing jobs that we have needed to complete. The building they are working on now will actually be turned into a rooming house for single men.
At the moment it will be a four bedroom house and we are hoping that the people who live in it will be a positive influence in the community. “Painting over the graffiti here is also important, hopeful the residents will be able to have pride in their road.”
Some of the men who have availed of the Hustle Truck are residents of Club Med, who will be moved shortly too Wyndham Resort staff facilities. The men are required to work for a minimum of five hours at a time and can work a full 40 hour week if they desire. Anyone interested in joining can call the BHC at 295-8623.
