Marilyn Steede recovering after 121-mile walk

Feet Feat: Marilyn Steede covered 121miles in her 24-hour walkathon this year to raise funds for local charities.

A former sergeant major is recovering after completing a 24-hour walk around the Island for charity.

Marilyn Steede, the only woman to ever reach the rank in the Bermuda Regiment, completed her annual challenge last Sunday morning.

She covered 121 miles this year, beginning her walk at Horseshoe Bay and looping around the Island several times before ending in Tucker's Town, St. George's.

The event is expected to raise thousands of dollars for Meals on Wheels. Ms Steede, a personal assistant, said: "Everything went well. I had beautiful weather. I don't know how much I've raised yet as it usually comes later. It comes in bits and pieces."

Meals on Wheels volunteer Margaret Lloyd, who drove a vehicle accompanying Ms Steede on her route, said: "I just thought she was the most amazing lady.

"I walked with her in the morning and she was sunny and bright and then I drove next to her between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. and it was pitch black and the wind was howling and she was still out there with hours to go. I think she's wonderful."

Anyone wishing to make a donation can send cheques made payable to Meals on Wheels to Ms Steede at PO Box SN614 or call her on 238-3358.
