The UBP can still win the election, declares Dunkley

Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley believes the Premier’s lack of consultation over issues has led to public outcry.

Last night the United Bermuda Party’s new leaders, Mr. Dunkley and Deputy Leader Patricia Gordon-Pamplin said they were prepared to go door to door in order to win the next election.

The two spoke in a panel interview on ZBM and were quizzed on their parties past and future, as well as their views on other politicians and current issues.

When asked by a reporter from The Royal Gazette if he trusted Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, Mr. Dunkley said: “The way some of the issues have been handled by the Premier have not been up front, like the Medical Clinic.

“On an island as small as this you need to be up front with the public.

“Still to this day as I read it unfold I ask what is the real motive behind this?”

He pointed out that the Premier admitted little public consultation was done and said that the public displeasure over the situation would not go away.

Ms Gordon-Pamplin said since a 1996 report recommending the clinic be closed Government has poured a lot of money and resources into ensuring that the needs of people attending the clinic were met and said now the operation was viable and patients were upset they would no longer have it.

Both Mr. Dunkley and Ms Gordon-Pamplin said they believed the UBP could win the next election, despite recent accusations that the party was still controlled by the white elite. They said party members were committed to going door to door to show Bermudians that they cared and would be a Government that stayed in touch with the needs of their constituents.
