Man in 'breach of security' near Premier

A man carrying a box cutter approached the Premier yesterday and was intercepted by a member of the public.

The box cutter was not in plain view and it's not clear if the man meant any harm to Premier Ewart Brown.

Nonetheless Chief of Staff Sen. Wayne Caines, who is responsible for Premier Brown's security, says he is "very concerned with this breach of security."

The incident happened while the Premier waited to speak at the airport renaming ceremony for L. Freddie Wade.

Hundreds witnessed the seemingly benign incident including The Royal Gazette.

Later officials informed the newspaper that the man had a bladed article.

He was not arrested and was escorted away from the premises.

However, Sen. Caines will ask Police to research the issue further and potentially bring the man in for questioning.

The Chief of Staff said: "Overt security is a very delicate issue in Bermuda but tonight's incident highlights that we must play close attention to the protection of the leader of our country."

He further explained that a previously ordered security assessment has been conducted by the Bermuda Police Service and the recommended security strategy will be implemented.

Sen. Caines said: "Other administrations did not have security, but what's clear is that this is the second breach in security this Premier has faced and as the Premier's Chief of Staff it is my responsibility to ensure the leader of our country is protected."

Earlier this year an intruder found his way into the Cabinet Building. Now a Police officer is stationed there.
