Newstead sells all of its units

Homes built at a Bermuda resort have completely sold out, however work on the guest facilities has experienced slight delays.

The Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort and Spa, which incorporates both the Newstead and Belmont properties in Warwick, was approved by a Special Development Order in 2004.

Plans for the resort included 104 guestrooms at the Newstead property and 50 guestrooms as well as 76 residential units on the Belmont property.

Construction on the houses is complete and all of them have been sold, however, Clarence Hofheins, the resort's General Manager said the guest facilities at Newstead were behind schedule.

He said: "We tried to open this summer, but we've been delayed a couple of months. One building which houses our restaurant has fallen behind and now we'll be open in September.

"The guest facility is ready, but we didn't want to open the resort so we rescheduled."

While work continues on the Newstead property, the 73 homes on the Belmont property have all been sold and a "state-of-the-art" driving range will officially open in 30 days.

Mr. Hofheins added: "We're redoing the entrance at Belmont and have a few finishing touches on the driving range, which will be fantastic.

"It will have automatic tees, 16 bays and will be open until 9 p.m. It will be great. We've had a soft opening for the members, but we will have a grand opening for the public in 30 days."

American Richard Halsey bought the Warwick property, which has been closed since November 1998, in July 2001 for an undisclosed sum.

Belmont Hills Development Limited submitted an application to the Planning Department in June 2001 to demolish the existing buildings and proceed with the massive redevelopment project.

In what has been a phased construction schedule, the guest facilities at the Newstead property were started first with the hope it could be ready for visitors this summer.

The plan was then to work on the Belmont guestrooms, which will now be postponed until the end of this year before ground is broken.

Mr. Hofheins added: "We wanted to finish the Newstead property because we wanted something up and running before starting more construction.

"We are very pleased about selling all of the residential units, though.
