$50,000 reward offered in Ord Road murder

Photo by Chris Burville 4/17/07 Superintendant Sinclair White and Crime Stoppers Chairman Sean Pitcher announce a fifty thousand dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of Jason Lightbourne.

A reward up to $50,000 is now available from Police if you can help them catch Jason Lightbourne’s murderer.

The 18-year-old was shot and killed last July while behind the wheel of a car on Ord Road in Paget.

In the nine months since the crime Police have been vexed by uncooperative witnesses who have remained silent even though investigators suspect they know who pulled the trigger.

Police Commissioner George Jackson said last year: “If people with information are not willing to help no amount of outside help or assistance is going to change the outcome of an investigation.”

It’s hoped now, by dangling a $50,000 award, Police can convince people with information to come forward.

Superintendent Sinclair White said: “I wouldn’t call it a final attempt. I would just say it’s another avenue we are taking in this investigation.”

“I would say that the Police and investigators know there are individuals out there that have heard, that have probably seen, the incident. We need to get them to come forward.”

The reward money is coming from a partnership between the Bermuda Police Service and Crime Stoppers — an anti-crime group which is able to guarantee anonymity to people who ring their call centre in Miami, Florida. In this case, anonymity is a particularly critical component.

Crime Stoppers Chairman Sean Pitcher said: “We are partnering with the Police primarily to make sure the information is not withheld.

“And for people who are afraid perhaps the reward will pry the information out.”

It’s been long speculated that the Jason Lightbourne murder is related to gang activity and anyone who cooperates with Police may put themselves in danger.

Yesterday Supt. White encouraged anyone facing intimidation to contact Police and they would evaluate the situation and potentially provide protection.

He said: “Everybody in this community has a role to play. They are a part of this community. They should do their civic duties in assisting the Police.”

Investigators have put together a re-enactment video of the Lightbourne murder and shared it with the media in hopes of generating additional interest in the case. The full video is available on our website
