Rubber Duck Derby seeking entries
Rubber ducks can do more than float around in a baby's bathtub — they can help support Bermuda's terminally ill.
The Friends of Hospice charity has launched its 11th annual Rubber Duck Derby in support of Agape House, the Island's only home for terminally ill patients.
The derby — a duck race in the ocean — has raised more than $800,000 for the hospice since it started and pays for beds, medical equipment, meals, medication and kitchen staff.
Friends of Hospice president Gertie Barker said: "Without the people of Bermuda we would be lost. I would also like to thank our coordinator Karen Dyer, who works so hard to help put this event together, with the support of so many of us."
The event will take place on June 3 at Ordnance Island, St. George's, and is expected to raise $150,000 — $10,000 above last year's tally.
More than 3,000 ducks were adopted for the last event and organisers are hoping that number will expand this year.
In addition to the duck racing, games, face painting, food stalls and entertainment will also be featured.
Belco has been its main sponsor since the event started.
Speaking at Monday's press conference about the event Belco CEO Garry Madeiros said: "Agape House — through the Friends of Hospice — has done a tremendous job in supporting those in their time of need.
"Our role has always been to provide support in getting the funds necessary to bestow those particular services.
"I am appealing to all the corporate leaders out there, to support this event as well as the residential group."
Raffle tickets are on sale Island-wide at most businesses, ranging from $5 to $10 for families which include three races and a $150 ticket price for corporate supporters.
There are more than 100 prizes are up for grabs, including iPods, a 50cc moped from Bermuda Motors and four round-trip tickets on British Airways from Meyer Travel.
To enter the event or for more information, call 232-0859 or collect an entry form at Agape House, Belco or Bermuda Gas and Utility.
