Buddies unite in walk to raise funds for a friend with cancer

A group of “pub friends” from different trades and walks of life are coming together today to raise money in the name of a friend with cancer — for a Bermuda charity.

When one of group, Bob Emmett, fell ill with cancer the idea for a walk from Dockyard to “their pub”, Robin Hood, to raise money for the Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association was floated.

The Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association was founded in 1945 to assist patients fighting TB and educates the community about prevention and early detection of cancer.

Mr. Emmett is now recovering in a hospital in London, which is a relief for the friends who still hope to raise $20,000 for the charity by undertaking the walk this morning.

Yesterday, Andy Reading a friend of Bob and a walker said: “We’re all a crowd who hang out together at the pub. Bob fell ill with cancer and he’s in London recuperating.

“We decided to pick a charity and pick a walk to do a collection for that charity in his name.

“We’re trying to raise $20,000. There are 20 of us so it is only $1,000 for each of us, which should be manageable.”

The group will start from the Clocktower in Dockyard at 7.30 a.m. and will make the journey to their usual stomping grounds at the Robin Hood pub in Hamilton.

Pauline Girling, Marketing and PR Director at the Bermuda TB Cancer and Health Association, said: “It’s wonderful what they’re doing.

“They’re fuelled by enthusiasm and it’s probably the first time they’ve come up against someone they know who’s fallen ill with cancer.

“It’s wonderful what they’re doing. It’s a physical collective way to conquer their helplessness at having a friend diagnosed with the disease.”

Mr. Reading added: “Hopefully all of us will make it. We haven’t been doing any training. I think there will be a lot of blisters.”
