Suspended sentence for stealing rum
A 62-year-old man was in Magistrates' Court on Thursday for stealing two bottles of Cockspur rum from a supermarket.
Michael Minors, of Cove Valley, St. David's, who pleaded guilty to stealing the rum, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for three years.
Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told court that on March 11 this year, the manager of Somers Supermarket checked the liquor shelves and noticed a bottle of rum missing.
Later the same day, a staff member saw Minors walk past a shelf, take a bottle of Cockspur and put it under his jacket. He then walked out of the store.
After checking the CCTV footage, the store manager went into St. George's Square and found Minors drinking from the bottle. The manager called the Police, who arrested Minors and took him to the St. George's Police Station, where he admitted to stealing one bottle in the morning and one in the afternoon.
He added: "But I shared it with friends."
Mr. Mahoney told court Minors' had previous convictions and seemed to "have a thing" for Cockspur.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: "He has a thing for taking Cockspur. It was the same supermarket and the same victim."
He then sentenced Minors to 12 months imprisonment, which is suspended for three years.
