Woman fined $500 for cursing cops

Being drunk is no excuse for cursing at the Police, a Devonshire woman learned in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Jah-Nikka Young, 26, of Rec View Hill, pleaded guilty to using offensive words in a public place.

Junior Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told the court that Police on mobile patrol on Court Street, saw Young behaving in a loud and disorderly manner on April 11.

When Police approached her and asked for her name, she replied: "F**k off, I ain't giving you my name so f**k off."

Police warned her to watch her language.

After she ignored their warning and continued cursing them, she was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

When Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo asked Young to explain her behaviour, she responded: "I was drunk after partying and I just wanted to go home while waiting for a taxi.

"I was out with my best friend that just came back from college and I didn't bother anybody, I was just waiting for a taxi and they (Police) appeared."

Young had previous convictions, however, for violently resisting arrest and assaulting a Police officer in November 2003.

Mr. Tokunbo fined her $500 with 30 days default for the offensive words charge.
