Do your BEST for the Island's open spaces

Saying it with a T-shirt: BEST will hold a walk to raise awareness about the environment.

An environmental lobby group is sponsoring a two-mile walk this weekend to raise awareness and funds for their cause.

Bermuda Environment and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST), which has 180 to 190 members, opposes the Southlands development, but also promotes sustainable development ideas in the Government and private sector.

Their "Save the South Shore Walk" will hopefully raise funds to expand their projects, as well as increase the interest of the public in the open spaces of Bermuda.

BEST chairman Stuart Hayward said: "We're hoping many people will come out to enjoy the walk. At a walking pace, they may see things you wouldn't normally by passing in a car.

"It is also the first of what we anticipate to be many walks and activities to raise funds and awareness.

"So far expenses have been met by members, but we have some future projects which we need to raise funds for — a couple of public meetings, public forums and a half hour presentation on the issues."

The walk will be held on Sunday starting from Warwick Long Bay along South Road to the Southlands property and then back.

Walkers can start anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and there will be BEST members posted along the way to identify significant points of interest.

There is no entrance fee and no registration required, however, the environmental group will have a table at the top of Warwick Long Bay where the public can become members of the group and will be able to buy T-shirts for $20, $50 or $100.

These funds will go towards future projects for BEST, which include: Radio, TV and print adverts, hall rentals for public meetings and forums, equipment rentals for public events, and posters and flyers

The largest expense the group anticipates will arise from the costs of pursuing a Judicial Review if a Special Development Order (SDO) is issued for Southlands.
