Let your talent shine upon us
Berkeley Institute came alive in a vibrant display of colour and music as children showed off their creative talents last night. Spring Into The Arts is an annual celebration of the artistic abilities of youngsters across the Island.Last night, the Dellwood Family of Schools put on a show for several hundred people at Berkeley, featuring something for everyone from singing and dancing to jazz and a brass ensemble.
The children came from a collection of schools including Kidds Kollege, Victor Scott Primary, West Pembroke Primary, Saltus Grammar School. Northlands Primary, Dellwood Middle School and Berkeley Institute.
It was the third in a series of five shows from different groups throughout April, with more lined up for tonight and tomorrow.
The idea is that all four disciplines of the arts — visual arts, theatre, dance and music — are showcased throughout the festival.
Legendary musician Wendell (Shine) Hayward, chairman of the Spring Into The Arts committee, praised the efforts of all the children involved.
“Some of them have been working towards this since September or October,” he said last night.
“It’s a big deal for them. This night is very meaningful to them. It is a chance for them to truly allow their creative juices to flow.
“I have been very impressed so far. Every year we have a challenge of trying to be better than the previous year, and somehow we have managed it.
“I am pleased with the growing number of instrumentalists that are participating. You can see that arts and music are on the rise in our system. That’s a great thing.”
Tonight’s show is being laid on by the Whitney Family of Schools, while tomorrow is the turn of the Clearwater Family of Schools.
The show starts at 7 p.m. but doors are open from 6.30 p.m. to give people a chance to see artwork created by students.
