<Bt-4z44>Derby Day

PONY and horse jumping will be the order of the day on Sunday when Inwood Stables stages a Derby Day at Ocean View starting at 1 p.m.Unlike most shows held in a sand-covered ring, this Derby features jumping in an open field with different classes.

An Inwood spokesman said: “The public is invited to come and attend this spectacular event and admission is free — there will be snacks and beverages on the premises at St. Mark’s Road in Smith’s.”

Next month will see the Caribbean Equestrian Association’s Junior Jumping Competition come to Bermuda. Bermuda’s youngsters will take on those from the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Trinidad at the National Equestrian Centre at Vesey Street. The competition will be staged on May 12 and 13.

The CEA was formed in 1997 after a friendly junior jumping show between Trinidad and Jamaica. It was after this show that the idea was born to incorporate all the English speaking islands in a competition for the young equestrians hosted on one of these islands. The juniors borrow horses to ride in the same country that the competition is taking place. The first countries to join the CEA were Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad. Bermuda joined the CEA in 1999.
