File a float plan before boating

The Bermuda Police Service’s Marine Unit is reminding the public to always file a proper float plan before going boating or fishing off-shore.

It comes after Police and Bermuda Radio launched an extensive search for a fishing boat that did not file a float plan — causing their families to worry when they didn’t return on time.

Marine Police say a float plan should include where you’re going, when you’re planning to go and planning to return.

Three people were on the boat that was later located offshore and was able to return safely on Wednesday evening.

A copy of the plan should be filed with Bermuda radio and/or family members and friends. The vessel should have all of the required safety equipment onboard, as well as a VHF marine radio tuned to channel 16 in case of emergency communication.
