Squatters at Club Med will be leaving the former hotel on Monday — a month after the original eviction date.

Yesterday, a Government spokeswoman said the building the squatters will be moved to has met the fire code. Approximately 40 people lived on the St. George’s site, illegally, for months until Senator David Burch announced that the buildings were not safe and would be demolished.

He also announced that Government was close to securing a deal with developers to take over the hotel site which was abandoned two decades ago.

Yesterday the Government spokeswoman said: “The Ministry of Public Safety and Housing can confirm that the new date for all those residing at the former Club Med to vacate the premises is Monday, April 30.”

In the March press conference Sen. Burch, who is the Housing Minister, said the squatters would be moved to the Pembroke Rest Home or the staff quarters of the former Wyndham hotel — which is also slated for demolition. He said: “This is clearly a temporary solution however it provides interim relief for those in need.
